OMI TABLE (2017)

OMI DERIVED FROM THE YORUBA VERNACULAR WORD FOR WATER, EXPLORES THE FLUIDITY OF THE OCEAN’S SURFACE. THE PIECE COMBINES ELEMENTS OF MAKOKO, A HISTORICAL FISHING SETTLEMENT IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, AND SHODEINDE’S POWERFUL PERCEPTION OF WATER AS A SILENCING CAPTIVATING ENTITY THAT PUTS VIEWERS IN A CONTEMPLATIVE STATE. HUNDREDS OF INDIVIDUALLY HAND-SCULPTED MAHOGANY VENEERS HAVE BEEN LAYERED, MERGED, AND FORMED TO EMULATE THE RIPPLING EFFECT OF A SMOOTH-MOVING WAVE. LAID ABOVE THE RIPPLING SUPPORT, A STAINED GLASS TOP HAS BEEN CRAFTED WITH A RADIAL GRADIENT WHICH EMPHASISES THE EXTENDING MOTION OF RIPPLES WHEN THE OCEAN SURFACE IS DISTURBED.
